Comparison of Numbers { CBSE Class - 3rd, 4th & 5th Mathematics }

           Comparison of Number

    Today we will learn how we compare numbers among themselves.

[ 1.] When two numbers have different number of digits :---

Out of the two numbers, a number having more digits is greater than the other.

Thus, 17 > 6,   256 > 86,     1,235 > 929,     23,526 > 8,975.

[ 2.] When the two numbers have the same number of digits :---

 (i) First compare the digits at the left-most place in both the numbers. If they are not equal, then the number which has the greater digit at this place is greater than the other.

(ii) If they are equal, then compare the second digits from left in both the numbers. If they are not equal then the number which has the greater digit at this place is greater than the other.

(iii)  If they are equal in value, we compare their third digits from the left. Continue this process until we come across unequal digits at the corresponding places.

Thus, 15,306 and 15,410

Consider 15,306 and 15,410.

Both are 5-digit numbers.

 We start from the left most digits.

Here, 1 = 1. Next, we compare the second digits from the left. Here, 5 = 5. Next, we compare the third digits from the left. Here, 3 < 4 Thus, 15,306 < 15,410 or 15,410 > 15,306.
