Successor & Predecessor { CBSE Class - 3rd, 4th & 5th Mathematics }

Successor & Predecessor

Today we will study successor and predecessor.

successor :--

The number that comes just after a given number is called its successor.

To find the successor of a given number, we add 1 to the given number.

Example :--

(i) Successor of 19 = 19 + 1 = 20.

(ii) Successor of 189 = 189 + 1 = 190.

(iii) Successor of 1,349 = 1,349 + 1 = 1,350.

Predecessor :--

The number that comes just before a given number is called its predecessor.

To find the predecessor of a given number, we subtract 1 from the given number.

Example :--

(i) Predecessor of 10 = 10 – 1 = 9.

(ii) Predecessor of 200 = 200 – 1 = 199.

(iii) Predecessor of 3,487 = 3,487 – 1 = 3,486.
